In August I was asked to join the Keene State College Men's and Women's Cross-Country Coaching staff as an Assistant Coach. A role that I was both excited and honored to take on. As the season approached I thought more and more about what I could bring to the program. I was hoping to establish greater communication, organization, as well as being sure to train the athlete as a whole. I was looking forward to running with the team and simply just being a part of a program that had once been my world.
This season has been an incredible learning experience and test of my knowledge and abilities of my sport as well as my leadership.
I was asked to take on the role of Acting Head Coach after just three days into pre-season. The confidence that the administration, the team, and the alumni had in me I believe helped get our season off the ground. The theme of the season has been focus and train with the end in mind. In my initial talk with the team I preached that we need to work together to stay focused because our schedule does not change. We need to continue to do what we came here to do.
Since then, we have clocked miles, crushed workouts, and have continued to race one stride at a time.
In the face of adversity, the men's and women's cross-country teams have both had low points and high points but they have been able to come together to do the work. I am proud of a number of these athletes for understanding the importance of TEAM and for their continued support for one another as well as their trust and appreciation for the dedicated coaching staff we have. They have continued to improve upon their potential, which as a coach is all you can ask for.
On Saturday, Nov. 1st the Men's and Women's teams earned their respective

As we enter post-season I am confident that we [Keene State Cross-Country] will continue to race, one stride at a time, with all that we have. This is what these men and women have been working towards since the heat of the summer- they have been working to say that they did all they could and that it was their best.
As a coach, it's inspiring to see the willingness and investment of the athletes that you work with. It makes me miss it. It makes me remember and appreciate what I and my teammates once had. It makes me want it back. Perhaps this is why people who coach, coach forever. To be surrounded by the familiar excitement and energy, year in and year out.
Cross-Country teaches us to be gritty, that with passion, challenge, and perseverance we can have the stamina to succeed and make our goals reality.
The challenge of coaching is getting these athletes to understand that the time is now and that they are ready! Believe. Don't give up. What you give up, you can never get back.
It's not over until you cross the finish line, and only cross if you have nothing left to give.
Wish us luck at NCAA Division III New England Regionals, Nov. 15th
